Swansea University has been ranked 4th in the UK for turning research into new businesses - behind only Cambridge, Oxford and UCL
That’s according to the UK Spin-Out Register, an annual report that tracks and ranks universities across the UK based on how many new companies they have created from their research.
It’s the second year running the university has held that position, placing it ahead of every other university in the UK except Cambridge, Oxford and UCL.
Three companies founded by Swansea University researchers were selected to present at this year’s UK Global R&D and Science Investment Summit in London - a prestigious event bringing together leading investors and policymakers to highlight the UK’s most promising science and technology ventures.
Viamab Therapeutics is developing new drugs to treat ovarian cancer; CanSense is pioneering faster and more accurate cancer detection technology, and Ail Arian is helping manufacturers significantly cut their carbon emissions and reduce waste.
Rhys Bowley, Head of IP and Commercialisation at Swansea University, said: “Our university was created to service the region’s booming industries, so enterprise and entrepreneurship have always been part of the DNA here. We are committed to building companies that address global challenges in sectors critical to the UK’s future prosperity.”
